The 2018 CPD cycle instituted under the CPD Regulation (Solicitors (Continuing Professional Development) Regulations, 2017) S.I. 529 of 2017 came into effect on the 1st January 2018 and runs for the calendar year of 2018.

 

Every solicitor has a CPD requirement which includes a minimum of 3 hours management and professional development skills.

 

To meet that requirement this seminar will focus on the following key areas;

 

A review of GDPR and its implications for the running of a solicitors practice.

 

A review of the Professional Insurance following extension to cover certain aspects of cybercrime risk and an update on developments in the area.

 

A review of the continuing risks to practitioners of Cyber Crime with advices on pitfalls in the area.

SPEAKERS

Matthew Austin Solicitor, GDPR and the running of a Solicitors’ practice

Matthew is a partner in the Commercial & Business team at Hayes solicitors. He advises across a wide range of commercial disputes and is particularly experienced in cases before the Commercial Court. Matthew also practices extensively in the professional regulatory context with significant experience in acting in the defence of veterinary surgeons. Matthew is part of the Hayes solicitor’s commercial advisory team which advises a range of national and international clients on issues as diverse as commercial contracts, defamation, intellectual property and data protection law.

 

Sorcha Hayes a review of Professional Indemnity Insurance changes.

Sorcha is the Head of Practice Regulation for the Law Society of Ireland, which section has responsibility for regulatory matters including practising certificates, professional indemnity insurance, commencement and cessation of practices, professional names and notepaper, advertising, and matters pertaining to the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015. Sorcha is also the Secretary to the Law Society's Professional Indemnity Insurance Committee.

 

Fergal Mawe, solicitor a review of the continuing risks to practitioners of Cyber Crime with advices on pitfalls in the area.

Fergal Mawe is a practising solicitor within the Regulation Department of the Law Society of Ireland. He primarily works in the area of legal costs, commencement of practices and cyber security. Previous to taking up the position in the Law Society he worked in the areas of industrial relations and human rights.
