Aim and Objectives
The aim of this seminar is to examine the recent developments in criminal litigation legislation and case law. Criminal litigation practitioners have designed this seminar to ensure that practitioners are provided with advice and guidance in relation to the most significant changes in this practice area. Chairperson
Claire Loftus, Head of Directing Division, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Claire Loftus qualified as a Solicitor in Ireland in 1992. She joined the Chief State Solicitor’s Office as a prosecutor in 1993. She took office as Chief Prosecution Solicitor in December 2001 and was responsible for all solicitor services provided to the DPP nationwide. In 2009 she was appointed Head of Directing Division within the Office of the DPP . This division makes all prosecutorial decisions on files submitted by investigative agencies.

Vincent Deane, Principal of Vincent Deane & Co. Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Vincent Deane is the principal of Vincent Deane & Co. Solicitors in Castlebar, Co. Mayo. He is a contributing editor to the Law Society Criminal Litigation Manual and lectures Road Traffic Law on the Law Society Professional course. He is a former Senior Prosecuting Solicitor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. He is the State Solicitor for Mayo.
Conor MacGuill, MacGuill & Co., Co. Louth
Conor MacGuill is a Solicitor in the firm of MacGuill & Company primarily based in Dundalk. A former secretary of the County Louth Solicitors Bar Association, he is a committee member of Professional Training Skillnet and the Litigation Committee of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association. He appears regularly in all courts of both criminal and civil jurisdiction and has defended numerous Public Order prosecutions.
Dara Robinson, Sheehan & Partners, Dublin
Dara Robinson is a partner in the Dublin firm of Sheehan and Partners having originally been admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales. He lectures and tutors in Criminal Law and Human Rights at Blackhall Place. He is co-author of the Law Society’s Human Rights Law manual (published by Oxford University Press). He is Chairman of the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society.
Michael Staines, Michael Staines & Co. Solicitors
Michael Staines is a graduate of UCD qualified as a solicitor in 1974. He commenced work as a solicitor in a civil practice in 1976 and two years later joined a criminal law practice, where he later became a partner. He set up the firm Michael J. Staines & Company in 1985. He has written many legal articles and has lectured extensively, particularly on criminal law. He has appeared as an advocate in all courts.
