Anne Stephenson is the Principal of Stephenson Solicitors. She is a member of STEP, the DSBA Probate and Taxation Committee and Mental Health and Capacity Committee, the Probate Liaison Committee and the Law Society’s Probate Administration and Trust Committee and is vice-Chairperson of the Committee of the Solicitors for the Elderly. She lectures, examines and tutors on the Law Society's Professional Courses on the Wills Trusts, Probate, Tax Planning and Conveyancing Modules and on the STEP Diploma in Wills, Trust & Estate Planning. She also lectures on the Law Society's CLE Courses, and to the DSBA and numerous other professional bodies. She is the co-author of the OUP Manual on "Wills Probate and Estates" 3rd Edition 2011, and the OUP Manual on Conveyancing Volumes 1 & 2, 5th Edition 2010 and the co-author of OUP Manual on Capital Taxation.

JOHN COSTELLO

DUTY OF CARE TO THE VUNERABLE, SIGNING LEGAL DOCUMENTS IN HOSPITAL AND NURSING HOMES, WHAT ROLE HAVE MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES

John Costello is a Consultant in the Private Client Department of Beauchamps Solicitors and has over twenty five years experience in Wills, Administration of Estates, Trusts, Tax Planning, Wards of Court, Powers of Attorney and other legal issues affecting the older person. He also practises in Family Law and has acted for many clients applying for a Divorce and also provides legal advice to a number of charities.

John is out-going President of the Law Society of Ireland. He is a former Chairman of the Law Society Committees on Probate and Taxation and Law Reform. John is a former Committee Member of the Law Society Committee on Mental Health and Disability and of the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities. He is author of a best-selling textbook entitled, “Law and Finance in Retirement” published in March 2000. The second edition of this book was published in September 2002.

John is a member of STEP (The Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners). John also chaired a Law Society Law Reform Group which produced a major work on charity law in July 2002. This report recommended a radical overhaul of charity legislation. Many of its recommendations were incorporated in the Charities Act 2009.


MICHAEL LYNN, B.L.

MEDICAL TREATMENT AND CAPACITY

Michael Lynn is a practising barrister. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, he has represented many applicants in mental health cases in the High and Supreme Courts, including S.M. v. Mental Health Commission [2009] 3 IR 188, which led to the amendment of the Mental Health Act 2001.
